Dr. Chen Chen is a widely respected scientist and entrepreneur. He has conducted pioneering research in the field of food and nutrition for over 30 years, and was already recognized for his contributions to science in his student years. His master’s thesis was published by the Atherosclerosis Journal, and in a very rare circumstance, his PhD as directly funded by the American Heart Association.
Dr. Chen’s early work on lipoprotein metabolism and cardiovascular diseases led him to recognize the vital importance of dietary lipids to human health. He also developed an expertise in natural bioactives including dietary antioxidants that took him to the research and development at a major pharmaceutical company. For six years, Dr. Chen formulated many popular dietary Nutraceuticals and OTC products, oversaw several clinical studies, and served on important industry initiatives such as the USP Botanical Task Force.
While championing healthy lipids, Dr. Chen has conducted extensive studies on functional carbohydrates and participated in the R&D of some of the most innovative products on the market, such as Arterosil®.
As a business leader, Dr. Chen’s is America’s largest importer of essential fatty acids for the nutritional supplement industry, among many other ingredients that he supplies to leading manufacturers.
Through collaboration with scientists around the world, and through the importation of top quality ingredients, Dr. Chen has made it his mission to develop the best nutritional knowledge and products to help people lead long, happy and productive lives.
Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer
As Calroy’s CEO, Ed Hoyt brings decades of experience as a successful business leader.
He began his career as a rocket scientist, specializing in pneumatic fin-actuation control systems for missiles such as Sidewinder, Harpoon, Tomahawk & Patriot. At 24 he became the youngest ever Senior Development Engineer for a company with over 10,000 engineers worldwide.
Although he excelled in engineering, Ed recognized his true passion was entrepreneurship, and at 27 he left the corporate world to found and then sell several successful companies: The Value Guide, an advertising magazine, the Hoyt Financial Group, a multi-line insurance agency, and Hoyt Software Systems which wrote vertically integrated custom software for both industry and government.
In 1993, Ed co-founded and led a nutraceutical & cosmeceutical company, Infinity 2, that grew to over $150 million in total sales, with operations in 13 countries. This included $22 million in sales of the Infinity 2 Dark Field Phase-Contract Microscope. His company served over 5,500 health care professionals worldwide, in addition to some 100,000 independent sales representatives.
Its many first-in-class nutritional products were used by major sports teams including the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns and the New York Jets.
Since selling this company, Ed has focused primarily on mentoring CEOs and senior executives of entrepreneurial startups, helping them grow highly profitable, sustainable businesses. He has advised company owners in multiple industries in the United States, Europe, Asia and Latin America.
Ed has been featured in numerous business publications, including Entrepreneurs Illustrated, Opportunity World, Success Magazine, and the Nutrition Business Journal. He has appeared on CNN and was nominated “Arizona Entrepreneur of the Year” by Merrill Lynch. Derrick DeSilva, M.D.
Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Derrick DeSilva is a practicing internist with a wide range of medical interests. He serves as Senior Attending Staff at the Department of Medicine, Raritan Bay Medical Center(RBMC) in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He also serves on the teaching faculty of the JFK Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey.
Dr. DeSilva serves as Chairman of the Planning Committee, Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG) and is a Past President of the American Nutraceutical Association. He has been a recipient of the Alan Mintz Award for Excellence in Clinical Age Management Medicine, and he has received the Best Doctor Award by Castle Connolly for the past 15 consecutive years.
A published author and accomplished speaker, Dr. DeSilva is host of “Ask the Doctor” on WCTC Radio, a medical correspondent for Cablevision (News 12 New Jersey) and host of “12 to Your Health”.
Chief Marketing Officer
Jon Ward has over 30 years’ business experience in Europe and the United States. He began his career as the principal marketing writer for Pentagram, Britain’s leading design agency, and for Reuters’ Financial Services (now Thompson-Reuters).
Emigrating to the United States in 1992, he became co-owner of Young Associates, a boutique marketing agency in Phoenix Arizona, serving diverse clients from local restaurants to billion-dollar energy and real estate corporations. He went on to develop a consulting practice focused on supporting entrepreneurial enterprises with a social purpose. Much of this work has been in the direct sales industry, assisting the launch of numerous MLM companies, mostly in the field of wellness products.
In addition to healthcare, Mr. Ward has assisted the launch or transformation of companies in multiple other industries, including cosmetics, technology, heavy industry, finance, mergers and acquisitions, personal development, jewelry and fashion.
He holds a master’s degree in English literature from Cambridge University, and a master’s degree in social work from Sussex University. He is the author or co-author of four books in the fields of education, finance and marketing.
Sukey Smith has over 15 years’ experience selling both nutraceuticals and medical devices to health care professionals. During that time, she has supported hundreds of physicians and other HCPs with her expertise in product education and customer support.
Sukey has a remarkable history outside of sales that helps account for her exceptional communication skills. She graduated in music at University of Southern California. She is a top-rated photographer (she received a Kodak scholarship to USC), a successful songwriter (with grants from the National Endowment for the Arts), and an actor with a lifelong career in advertising and TV, including roles in popular shows such as LA Law, Growing Pains and Knot’s Landing. She also trains and shows American Eskimo dogs at Champion level.
